Project Spotlight: Updating the Roof Color on a Morris Plains Home

This homeowner in Morris Plains, NJ, wanted a new look for their home by updating their roof and changing the color, and we were excited when they called Ballantine Home Improvement to take on the job! Let’s take a look at what this project entailed!

Client’s Vision and Requirements

To give this home a brand new look, the homeowner wanted to change the roof color from brown to black. The homeowner also has plans to update the siding in the future, so we kept that in mind while working on the home. Additionally, we updated the roof on the homeowner’s shed and removed the unnecessary satellite dishes that were detracting from the home’s overall appearance.

Materials Used

For the roofing materials, the team used Owens Corning TruDefinition® shingles in Onyx Black, which provided an updated and modern look to the home. No siding trim or gutters were installed as part of this project.

Despite the scope of work, we were able to complete the project in just one day! This quick turnaround time is a testament to the team’s expertise and experience in roofing services.

Improving Attic Ventilation

During this project, we also improved the attic ventilation by removing the attic fan and installing a new ridge vent. This is an air exhaust vent installed on the peak of the roof.

Discovering Rotted Wood

One notable aspect of the project was that while removing the old roof, the team discovered that the roof over the front porch was rotted. We promptly replaced all of the sheathing (plywood) over the porch. This is a prime example of why we never roof over the existing roof. While you may save money doing this, you may also be missing a major problem, and adding weight to an area that is already compromised. This is an example of the team’s commitment to quality work and to ensuring that no corners are cut.

This project was so impressive that the homeowner’s next-door neighbor came by while we were doing this job, and we ended up doing their roof too!

I got a few quotes from various highly rated companies for roofing, gutters, and siding. I happen to find Ballantine from a neighbor that was doing their roof also and was amazed at how quickly it was done. I called the number on the van and Scott came to look over the job and gave me a quote. He was the only one that went into the attic to inspect before giving a quote. He also gave me a quote for gutter replacements with leaf guard and repaired some siding and facia. The team was quick and professional and did the job in under the time quoted. They also removed the many attic fans I had and put in ridge vents which will save me a bundle on electricity bills. I'm very happy with way the roof and gutters came out and would definitely recommend. They also went above and beyond helping me troubleshoot some other issues. A+++

A few weeks ago a periodic leak in our living room from the roof became consistent. Every time it rained, water came in and was damaging our wood floor. Within a few days, Scott and Ballantine Home Improvement had inspected my house, provided a very reasonable quote, and fixed our roof. We were so happy with the new flashing, we hired Ballantine to install gutter guards too. Of course, they were able to schedule the install for the gutter guards within a week too.I cannot recommend Ballantine Home Improvement enough. They are consummate professionals, whose work is top notch, with surprisingly reasonable prices.
